Recently, blockchain technology has quietly become popular in the overseas halal market. Currently, Malaysian consumers can now use the halal blockchain network toHalal Blockchain Network (HBN) is being used to track information along the halal food supply chain. HBN is a network technology developed by Malaysia's local Malakat ecosystem. Mohd Fadzil Hashim, HBN founder and Malakat Group CEO, stated that with HBN's QR code facility, consumers can simply scan the QR code on food packaging to learn detailed information about the food's origins and track food supply chain data. This includes halal food certified by JAKIM, the Malaysian Department of Islamic Development.

On March 5, Deputy Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Che Abdullah Mat Naw officially launched HBN

“HBN cannot replace JAKIM’s halal certification, but it adds value in ensuring the food sold is truly halal,” he told the media after Deputy Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Che Abdullah Mat Nawi officially launched HBN here today.

He said that with this blockchain technology, data on food supply from the producer level to the seller level is stored in the form of linked blocks and distributed through the internet to millions of computers around the world for storage and authentication purposes.

He said the use of the latest blockchain technology can ensure that the halal food supply chain is protected and will not be mixed with non-halal food, and consumers will not be deceived by counterfeit halal trademarks.

Mohd Fadzil said that to ensure the authenticity of the data and information stored in HBN, all relevant data will not be entered by the importer, but by the Malacat Ecosystem staff themselves. "If the importer is from Pakistan, our staff will go there to collect all the necessary data. This will provide assurance to consumers."

at the same time,Che Abdullah said the Malakate Ecosystem's efforts to develop HBN were also supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries after issues and reports were raised about the manipulation of halal meat product certificates.

“In this context, HBN will help ensure that food supplies comply with religious requirements as the food production process can be traced directly to the slaughterhouse, thus eliminating consumer doubts about the halal authenticity of products, especially imported meat,” he said.
