KUALA LUMPUR: Touted as the world’s largest halal trade expo, the 15th Malaysia International Halal Show (MIHAS) here from April 4 to 7 is expected to attract global attention.

With its first exhibition in 2004 as a consumer marketplace for halal products, MIHAS has grown into a highly anticipated annual professional trade event for the global halal industry and has promoted Malaysia as a global hub for the Islamic economy.

Attracting over 1,000 exhibitors from over 40 countries this year, MIHAS, to be held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), is the world’s most watched halal trade expo, establishing it as a cornerstone of global halal trade.

In 2017, MIHAS attracted 576 exhibitors from 33 countries, with China, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan and the Philippines representing the largest number of exhibitors. The total trade value contributed RM1.1 billion last year.

According to Mohammad Amitin, Director of the Halal, F&B and Agriculture Division at the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), MIHAS's reputation and credibility strengthen the country's halal brand, enabling locally produced halal products and services to penetrate the international market. As the premier platform for halal product trade, traders from around the world utilize MIHAS to source these products and services. Therefore, we tailor our trade themes, programs, and approaches to ensure MIHAS meets international standards and expectations, and that Malaysia remains a global hub for the halal industry.

Through its 46 offices worldwide, MATRADE actively seeks out potential trade buyers and engages them in the International Sourcing Programme (INSP), which is one of the main purposes of MIHAS.

The Geneva-based International Trade Report (ITC) in its 2015 publication praised MIHAS's INSP initiative for bringing together international buyers and local sellers.

“We take buyers from all over the world and match them with Malaysian companies across sectors. They keep coming back every year for more options and opportunities within the MIHAS cluster,”

Aminuddin added that about 4,400 stock-holding units (SKUs) were sold during MIHAS 2017, a 17 percent increase compared to the previous year. A SKU is an alphanumeric identification code for a specific product that can be used for tracking purposes.
