Introduction to Malaysian Halal Standard (MS 1500:2009)
2025-05-15
Titled “Halal Food: Production, Preparation, Handling and Storage - General Guidelines (MS 1500:2009)”, it was developed under the Malaysian Standards Development Scheme, under the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, Standards Development Department of Malaysia.
The Malaysian Standard is one of five government initiatives to achieve the vision of establishing Malaysia as a halal food hub.
The standard was developed by the National Industrial Standardization Committee, which covers halal matters, and is represented by several organizations including JAKIM, which chairs the technical committee.
This standard contains practical guidelines for the food industry in preparing and handling halal foods, including nutritional supplements. It aims to establish basic rules for food products or food businesses in Malaysia. It will be used by JAKIM as the basis for certification, while other requirements will also be considered to complete the certification process.
The document has gone through the process required by international standardization bodies such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), where the international system for the development of standardization is based on agreement among all significant parties, including governments, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, researchers and professional bodies. DSM Malaysia uses the same ISO policy.
It is hoped that in the future, Malaysian standards (official government documents) will be promoted internationally and recognized by other countries or regions such as the United States, Europe, China and ASEAN members.
