Datuk Ng Jui Sia, chief executive officer of Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd, said that Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&N) will explore more opportunities in the Halal food industry in order to expand its business.
Last September, the contract between the company's beverage division and the Coca-Cola group expired. 'We will feel the impact of separating from the Coca-Cola company, but it does not mean that we must stay at our current level.' He told reporters at the company's annual general meeting: 'We must transform ourselves; we should explore other opportunities through our Halal status.' On the local front, F&N will face many challenges, with raw material and milk powder prices rising this year. Ng said: 'The sugar price issue in Malaysia has not been resolved, so there will be challenges.'
Malaysia's Halal food market holds an advantage
Datuk Ahmad Husni Md Hanadzlah, Malaysia's Minister of International Trade and Industry, said that Malaysia has a great advantage in the global food and beverage market, especially in Halal food. The global Halal food market is expected to be worth $150 billion (570 billion ringgit) per year. Speaking ahead of the 6th Malaysia International Food & Beverage Trade Fair, he said: 'Halal food has unlimited potential, while our current export value is only 6.5 billion ringgit.'
Ahmad Husni said that Malaysia's Halal food has the advantage to win international markets. In 2004, Malaysia's processed food and beverage exports grew by 19.8%, from 7.8 billion ringgit in 2003 to 9.4 billion ringgit, with the main markets being Singapore, the United States, China, Japan, and Australia.
