The Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA), the standardization and certification authority in the United Arab Emirates (EAU), has ordered that halal certified products supplied to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Gulf Council Countries (GCC) markets must obtain halal certification from recognized bodies for the relevant specific product categories and must be accompanied by a shipment certificate.
Therefore, it is very important to request and obtain a Shipment Certificate for each shipment before exporting to prevent the goods from being stopped at the customs upon arrival at the destination. The request must be completed 5 days before shipment.
This update confirms the global trend towards continuous monitoring of the traceability of halal-certified products to protect consumers. Some countries, such as the Gulf States, have already made halal certification mandatory. From January 2018, it will be mandatory for all destinations.
