Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&N) will explore more opportunities in the halal food industry to expand its business, said Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Ng Jui Sia.

Last September, the company's beverage division's contract with Coca-Cola expired. "We will feel the impact of the separation from Coca-Cola, but it doesn't mean we have to stay at our current level," he told reporters at the company's annual general meeting. "We have to transform ourselves, and we should explore other opportunities through our halal status." Domestically, F&N will face numerous challenges, including rising raw material and milk powder prices this year. Ng said, "The sugar price issue in Malaysia has not been resolved, so there will be challenges."

Malaysia's Halal food market dominates

Malaysia's Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Ahmad Husni Md Hanadzlah, stated that Malaysia has significant advantages in the global food and beverage market, particularly in halal food. The global halal food market is estimated to be worth US$150 billion (RM570 billion) annually. Speaking ahead of the 6th Malaysia International Food and Beverage Expo, he said, "Halal food has enormous potential, yet our current exports are only RM6.5 billion."

Ahmad Husni stated that Malaysia's halal food products have an advantage in winning international markets. In 2004, Malaysia's processed food and beverage exports increased by 19.8%, from 7.8 billion ringgit in 2003 to 9.4 billion ringgit, with Singapore, the United States, China, Japan, and Australia as the main markets. Key export items, including aquatic products, accounted for 22.8% of the total processed food and beverage volume; cocoa powder and cocoa products accounted for 17.9%; food products, including soy sauce, accounted for 12%; and margarine and ghee accounted for 8.5%. We hope that domestic companies will pay more attention to the Halal market, obtain Halal certification for their products, and enter the market in a timely manner.
