Introduction to BPJPH, the new official Indonesian Halal certification agency

2025-05-15

New Indonesian official institutionsBPJPH was established by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs in October 2017. Pursuant to Indonesian Law No. 33/2014, BPJPH began certifying halal products on October 17, 2019, succeeding MUI, Indonesia's sole halal certification and auditing agency since 1989, as the nationally recognized halal certification body in Indonesia. The Indonesian Presidential Office also supports BPJPH in issuing international halal certification to more micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. Beginning in early 2022, BPJPH has been continuously recruiting academics, practitioners, religious scholars, and government agencies with expertise and capabilities in halal products to join its certification team, aiming to provide a better service experience for certification applicants worldwide.

The ISO37001: Anti-bribery Management System (iISO37001: Anti-bribery Management System) implemented by BPJPH in December 2021 can effectively avoid suspicion of bribery and corruption, thereby winning the trust of the international community in the integrity of Indonesia's halal certification.

BPJPH officials stated that, according to the mandatory provisions of Article 33 of Indonesia's Law No. 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Assurance, the management of BPJPH's halal certification remains under the Indonesian Council of Islamic Scholars (MUI). Article 33 of the new law and the Halal Product Assurance Law (UU JPH) stipulate that MUI is authorized to test halal products.
