Overview of Egypt's Halal Market Economy

2025-05-15
Egypt, a member of the OIC Cooperation Organization and the SMIIC Institute of Standards and Metrology, boasts a population of nearly 100 million, almost 90% of whom are Muslim. The country is represented at SMIIC by the Egyptian Organization for Quality Control and Standardization (EOS). Egypt is a member of the Technical Committees for Halal Food, Halal Cosmetics, Agricultural Products, Terminology, and Handicrafts, and the Conformity Assessment Standards Committee (CCA). Egypt is also a member of the SMIIC Certification Committee. Brazil, India, Sudan, and Paraguay are the main importers of livestock and meat from Egypt, and Egypt is also the largest export market for American beef offal. Meanwhile, although Egypt has banned meat imports from EU countries since the 1990s, due to Ireland's success in combating animal diseases, Egypt signed an agreement with Ireland, paving the way for meat imports from Ireland. Halal certification in Egypt is carried out by the Egyptian Organization for Standards and Quality (EOS). In addition to food, cosmetics and personal care products are also halal certified. Imported food must be halal certified. Exporters must provide a halal certificate certifying that the food has been produced in accordance with the country's halal standards. A COMCEC report indicates that the number of Muslim tourists visiting Egypt is expected to increase by 7.4% from 700,000 in 2015 to 1 million by 2020. Both per capita spending and the number of tourists are expected to increase.
