I have been eating fully halal food since I was 16. At that time, not all of my Muslim friends ate halal food, but I started to take it seriously after I learned about halal in Sunday school.
Growing up in the 1980s and 1990s, there weren't many halal restaurants in the Bay Area—just one or two Chinese halal restaurants and a few Indian-Pakistani restaurants. In those days, people like me who ate halal food would be happy to eat halal meat outside, especially during Eid al-Adha.
I'm so grateful now that 20 years later, there are so many great halal restaurants in the Bay Area (and elsewhere in the US). These restaurants offer a wide variety of food. I can now enjoy halal burgers, halal fried chicken, halal beef, pizza, and more.
