A hub will be established here to help companies access the global halal market, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman
At a charity dinner held by the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SMCCI), he said the centre would allow companies to share resources for product development, production and distribution.
He noted that the centre, which is being jointly supported by Spring Singapore and Singapore International Enterprise, will identify food companies that want to expand their halal exports.
JTC, the landlord of the industrial space, will identify a suitable location for the factory, he said.
He urged local companies to look into the "untapped potential" in the internationalisation of local food products, particularly the global halal food market valued at over US$1.1 trillion (S$1.4 trillion).
"Singapore companies play a more important role in this market, trusting the quality of Singapore products and Singapore's MUIS certification," he said.
Singapore's multicultural background can provide halal products that are in demand by tourists and Muslim groups from Japan, Korea, Africa, China and Taiwan, he pointed out.
