Detroit offers a wide selection of kosher options
2025-05-15
According to the latest national Jewish population study, 72,000 people from 32,000 Jewish households in the United States live in the Greater Detroit area, and nearly 70% of them say they have ties to the Jewish community and eat kosher food regularly or occasionally. Consumers are already enjoying the abundance of kosher options available in stores and supermarkets.
Shloimie Goldman's stores offer consumers a large selection of cholov yisroel and glatt kosher products, in addition to well-known kosher brands.
Jerry Denha's supermarket offers high quality kosher products
Jerry Denha, owner of three supermarkets in the Detroit area, hopes his 55,000-square-foot store will be a popular addition to the thriving Jewish community. Indeed, his store includes a kosher deli, takeout, fresh meats, fish, and kosher-certified wine. Denha is encouraged by the fact that non-traditional kosher shoppers are buying many kosher products, especially meats, believing that kosher is of higher quality. Consumers are accustomed to reading about meats with quality issues, and kosher offers a level of comfort that regular meats simply can't provide.
Denha's kosher catering business, head chef Hershkovitz, is exceptional, placing a strong emphasis on fresh and natural foods, along with an international theme—perhaps offering Thai, Mexican, or Italian recipes—while also respecting tradition. The local rabbi is optimistic that the community can accommodate a variety of kosher options, emphasizing the community's 25 Orthodox synagogues, kosher bakeries, and kosher restaurants. Jerry Denha is particularly interested in his recently reopened farm in Oak Park, home to 1,200 Orthodox Jewish families in the city. For kosher consumers, the farm's updated kosher program offers more options, often associated with larger cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Chinese companies are encouraged to pay close attention to kosher market trends and seize opportunities.
