Algeria will require Halal certification from June 2017

Djamel Hales, director general of the Algerian Institute for Standardization (IANOR), said in Algiers on Tuesday that under an inter-ministerial decree, food products must be certified halal and the certification will be implemented gradually from June 2017.
“June 2017 will mark the official start of mandatory halal certification of food products, following the publication of a list of products covered by the standard,” Hales told a forum in El Moudjahid newspaper.
The official said a national committee chaired by the Ministry of Commerce will "soon" draw up a list of relevant foods to oversee certification and labelling as halal.
In addition to the Ministry of Commerce, the committee is composed of the Ministries of Agriculture, Industry, Health and Religious Affairs, as well as public institutions and agencies (Algerian Center for Quality and Packaging Control, Algerian Pasteur Institute…).
The committee's main task is to review the Halal certification process and Halal food regulations and provide opinions.
As for IANOR, it is responsible for determining the characteristics, logos and conditions for granting and designating the "Halal" label.
For imported products, the Halal certificate must be issued by an authorized body and recognized by the Halal Certification and Labelling Monitoring Committee.
