China builds halal productivity

2025-05-15

Wuzhong City, in the northwestern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, plans to become China's largest domestic and international halal product industrial park, China Daily said.

The local government is seeking to establish cattle farms as part of measures to ensure the authenticity of halal food production.

Wuzhong has 726,000 Muslims, accounting for 53% of the city's total population. According to the Pew Research Center, the largest consumers of imported halal food are from the Middle East and North Africa, with the Persian Gulf importing about $10 billion worth of food each year.

In 2014, China exported 6,494 tons of beef (worth $59 million), an 11 percent year-on-year increase, primarily due to increased volumes to Kyrgyzstan, Hong Kong, and North Korea. Halal shipments to Malaysia and most Middle Eastern markets declined, but the Middle East remained China's largest beef customer in 2010, with beef exports from China at a record high of 22,007 tons.

Sheep meat exports also rose in 2014, reaching 2,212 tonnes ($20 million), but were still below the record set in 2010, as domestic demand gradually outstripped supply.

It's important for China to recognise the growing demand for red meat both at home and abroad, both halal and non-halal, Meat and Livestock Australia said.

However, as the cattle and sheep industry in China progresses through a period of consolidation and modernization, it is expected to overcome structural barriers while maintaining supply and food safety standards.
