Since many types of beer are not kosher certified, people still rely on a list of recommendations and disrecommendations. Below are some recent issues and policies regarding beer from the "cRc" and "Star-K."
All original, additive-free beers are safe to drink, even if they are not kosher certified. This applies to both American and imported beers, including light, dark, and non-alcoholic beers.
Beer containing additives, including spices, plant extracts, and fruits, is not recommended.
The following are exceptions:
1) Many breweries produce specialty beers that contain additives. Check the label and don't assume all varieties are acceptable.
2) Microbreweries, bars and craft breweries need a kosher certificate for their beer.
3) All beers containing lactose, milk, etc. require a kosher certificate.
4) Beer imported from Israel requires a kosher certificate;
Star-K
Star-K has informed two major beer distribution companies in Baltimore and surrounding areas that they are Jewish-owned. While many beers sold in Baltimore are typically supposed to be chometz she'avar alav haPesach, this is not appropriate to purchase at this time. A list of affected beers can be found at http://tinyurl.com/hj3f8v6. These companies are the exclusive suppliers of these brands in the listed areas.
Distributors have informed Star-K that their existing beer stocks will not be consumed until July. A more detailed preparation timeline will be announced online, and consumers can check Star-K's website for the updated date. Until then, these beers should not be purchased. If you have already purchased any of these beers, please contact your rabbi for guidance.
Star-K does not consider any other beer brands not on this list to be a problem. Furthermore, any beer (including the brands mentioned above) can be purchased at the kosher shop located at 6309 Reisterstown Rd.
This information applies only to the counties in Maryland specified in the listing. Star-K does not have information for areas outside of Maryland.
The CRC's list of recommended and unrecommended beers can be found on the CRC website. The recommended list includes hundreds of beers, both kosher and non-kosher. For a complete list of all beers and spirits that use meat-derived ingredients, please visit the following website: www.barnivore.com
