cRc - Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt Storage Policy

2025-05-15

Several new ice cream and frozen yogurt shops have opened in Chicago and its surrounding countryside. Some are stand-alone stores, while others are located in shopping malls.

Most of these stores claim to sellCertification by the Chicago Jewish Council or other reliable agencykosher foods, and even signs indicating they are. Unfortunately, some of the products they sell are certified kosher in sealed containers at the factory, but are not actually stored there. These certifications apply only to the unopened ice cream and yogurt listed on the certificate, not necessarily the store itself. Simply asking a store attendant if an item is kosher isn't enough, as they may not be aware of the specific requirements that affect the item's kosher status. It's important to verify that the actual product is in its original sealed container and that the product in the container or soft-serve ice cream machine is the same product you see in the original factory box, not a "kosher box."

In some cases, spoons must be cleaned first. Other products, such as cones, toppings, or other additives, must also be checked for kosher. Other items, such as cakes and novelty foods, may come from an outside source, so caution must be exercised when purchasing these items. You can't assume nothing has changed since your last visit, so always check carefully when you shop! There are many kosher-related issues you can encounter in non-certified stores. These are just some of the common ones.
