Guidelines for Halal Cleaning Agents and Disinfectants Used in Production
2026-05-11
To ensure compliance in the halal production process, standardize the products used in equipment cleaning and disinfection, and clarify the halal certification and usage requirements for various cleaning agents and disinfectants, this guideline is hereby formulated. All related operations must be strictly carried out in accordance with this guideline and the company's internal standards.
I. Requirements for Cleaning Agents Used in Halal Production
Cleaning agents used for equipment cleaning must strictly comply with halal production standards; the use of non-halal cleaning agents is strictly prohibited. Specific requirements for various cleaning agents and the relevant documents required are as follows:
(a) Halal requirements and required documents for various cleaning agents
Organic compound cleaning agentsThe supplier must provide the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the cleaning agent, along with a declaration that the cleaning agent is free of swine-derived ingredients, ensuring that it does not contain or have come into contact with any ingredients of swine origin.
Cleaning agents with water or sodium hydroxide as the main componentOnly the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the cleaning agent needs to be provided to ensure that the product ingredients comply with Halal regulations.
Cleaning agents with ethanol as the main componentThe cleaning agent must be provided with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and a declaration of origin from an alcohol or non-alcoholic beverage manufacturer, avoiding the use of alcoholic raw materials derived from alcoholic beverage production.
(ii) Common cleaning agents that meet halal requirements
The following common cleaning agents meet the requirements for halal production by default and can be used directly for cleaning halal production equipment: water, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, potassium hydroxide, etc.
(III) Supplementary Requirements for Special Cleaning Agents
Cleaning agents containing fragrances, enzymes, or other similar ingredients are not considered to be halal by default. Valid halal supporting documents (such as halal certification, process flow charts, and halal compliance statements) must be provided. Only after confirmation that they comply with halal regulations can they be used as cleaning agents for halal production.
(iv) Precautions for using cleaning agents
The type, specifications, usage methods, and operating procedures of the cleaning agents used in the cleaning process must be completely consistent with the descriptions in your company's "Standard Operating Procedures for Cleaning" ("Cleaning SOP"). Unauthorized changes to the type of cleaning agent or violations of operating procedures are strictly prohibited.

II. Disinfection Requirements for Halal Production
The disinfection process in halal production must ensure that the disinfection methods and disinfectants used comply with halal production standards. Common disinfection methods and disinfectant requirements are as follows:
(a) Disinfection methods and disinfectants that meet halal requirements
Most known chemical disinfectants and ultraviolet disinfection methods meet the requirements of halal production and can be directly used for disinfection operations in halal production processes. Common compliant chemical disinfectants include formaldehyde, potassium permanganate, ethanol, peracetic acid, ethylene oxide, and hydrogen peroxide.
(II) Precautions for the use of disinfectants
The type, concentration, and method of use of the disinfectant used in the disinfection process, as well as the disinfection method adopted, must be completely consistent with the description in your company's "Disinfection Standard Operating Procedure" ("Disinfection SOP") to ensure compliance of the disinfection process.
III. General Requirements
Enterprises need to establish and improve management ledgers for cleaning agents and disinfectants, keep detailed statistics on all types of products used for equipment cleaning and disinfection, and regularly check the relevant certification documents of the products (MSDS, halal support documents, etc.) to ensure that all cleaning agents and disinfectants used continuously comply with halal production standards and ensure the compliance of halal products from the source.
