Applying for Halal Certification
Singapore international Halal certification is granted by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS). For enterprises, obtaining Halal certification can be an arduous task. But in the long run, it is well worth it. Before an enterprise is approved for Halal certification, it needs to meet a series of conditions. The following are the key conditions enterprises must comply with:
- Raw materials, processing agents and additives must be Halal. These items must be accompanied by supporting documents.
- The applicant needs to submit the enterprise's floor plan to MUIS. The floor plan should clearly define the areas used for the production and handling of Halal food—production, kitchen, storeroom and equipment. Anything that is not Halal must be declared to MUIS and will undergo a cleansing ritual.
- The enterprise owner or applicant must appoint Halal team representatives and select a senior manager as the Halal team leader.
- The Halal team is part of the ten principles of the Singapore MUIS Halal Quality Management System. They are responsible for ensuring that the restaurant complies with MUIS Halal certification conditions. Halal team members must also complete the mandatory Halal training program.
Enterprise owners can apply for Halal certification online through the MUIS-WAREES China office (SINOQUAL). After submitting the application, an auditor designated by MUIS will review and check whether the enterprise meets all conditions and whether the materials and supporting documents meet requirements. If there are any deficiencies, the auditor will note them in the online application form. Any deficiencies must be resolved before the specified deadline. If everything is done according to the rules, the auditor will visit the factory premises to audit and inspect. If the auditor is satisfied with the on-site review, the application will be recommended. However, if the auditor finds any deficiencies in the restaurant, the applicant will need to make corrections, and another on-site inspection will be carried out, which is very important to ensure the enterprise meets MUIS Halal certification conditions.
Fees
Enterprises can inquire about MUIS-Halal certification fees through the only official MUIS-WAREES China office (SINOQUAL). Fees must be paid by cash or check to the MUIS-WAREES office or China office (SINOQUAL) account. If fees are not paid during the application process, MUIS will reject the application without further notice. Enterprise Halal team members must undergo the Halal training program. From start to finish
After submission, the process will begin within 14 working days (standard application) or 7 working days (express application). The audit will take up most of the time, and corrective actions, if any, will take some more time. The faster you get through the audit, the sooner you will obtain the Halal certificate. After the application is approved, the Halal certificate will be emailed to you. This valuable certificate is valid and internationally recognized. Halal certification is valid for two years, and 2-3 months before the certificate expires, the certifier at the MUIS-WAREES Halal China office will remind you in advance to renew the certificate.
