UK: As the Young Muslim Population Grows, So Does Demand for Beef

Experts point out that growing demand for beef and a growing young Muslim population have created opportunities.

At a Halal industry seminar held by the Halal Food Authority (HFA), Norman Bagley, policy director of the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS), explained that there are great opportunities in the Halal food industry, but growth in the Halal beef industry is more pronounced. 'Our Halal members have seen increased productivity, but we have seen demand for Halal beef grow significantly over the past five years.'

Dr. Phil Hadley, head of global supply chain development for beef & lamb at the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), agreed that demand for beef is growing. 'Demand for beef, though small, is growing steadily. But domestic beef supply is limited, which has boosted beef imports into the UK. This creates conditions and also creates opportunities.'

According to the 2011 census data, the UK had 2.7 million Muslims, making up 4.8% of the UK population. This is expected to grow to 5.5 million by 2030. The survey data also showed that 47% of Muslims are third and fourth generation, and 33% are Muslims under the age of 15.

Hadley emphasized the demand opportunities brought by young Muslims. 'Businesses that don't pay attention to the youth market will miss opportunities.'

He also mentioned some negative reports troubling Halal slaughter and called on the industry to adopt a pragmatic attitude to minimize negativity.

He said, 'The industry, like a flower depicted in dim light, lacks transparency. While we are sensitive to the process, we must be transparent. If we are not, others will be.'
