What Does It Mean for a Product to Be Halal-Certified?

Halal is an Arabic word meaning permissible. Halal-certified products are those permitted or accepted under Muslim dietary norms. For products to obtain this certification, they must come from acceptable sources, such as cattle or chicken, and be slaughtered according to these Halal regulations or standards.

Offering Halal-certified products lets Halal consumers be confident that the products they use comply with their culture and customs. Likewise, a product passing Kosher certification gives Kosher consumers the same assurance.

Why is Halal certification crucial?

There are about 2 billion Muslims worldwide, nearly half of whom live in Asia. This huge market has experienced rapid growth over the past few decades and is currently worth about USD 2 trillion. According to CNBC, as demand grows rapidly, Halal products in the cosmetics, personal care, healthcare and pharmaceutical industries will see the greatest growth. In recent years, with the deployment of China's Belt and Road strategy, China has deepened cooperation with Asian and neighboring countries; among Asian countries, Muslim-majority countries account for more than half, and they need Halal every day to meet their daily dietary needs. Against the backdrop of China's Belt and Road economic strategy, Halal is definitely big business for Chinese entrepreneurs!

The Halal certification process

To complete the Halal certification application process, a company must complete a three-step process together with a consulting team. This process includes:

Assessment - the applicant fills in application materials and submits them to the Halal certification body's China office for written review and assessment, to confirm the feasibility of the next-step on-site inspection.

Inspection - an on-site inspection of the factory and processes.

Certification - once the assessment and inspection are complete, if passed, the applicant will be granted Halal certification.
