Indonesia's new official body BPJPH was established by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs in October 2017. Under Indonesia's Law No. 33/2014, BPJPH began HALAL certification of products on 17 October 2019, taking over from MUI—Indonesia's sole halal certification and audit body since 1989—to become the nationally recognized halal body within Indonesia. The Indonesian Presidential Office also supports BPJPH in issuing international HALAL certification to more micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. Since early 2022, BPJPH has continuously invited scholars, practitioners, religious scholars and government bodies with relevant halal-product competence and expertise to join the certification team, in order to bring a better service experience to certification applicants around the world.
The ISO 37001 anti-bribery management system that BPJPH implemented in December 2021 can effectively avoid suspected bribery and corruption, thereby winning the trust of the international community in the integrity of Indonesian halal certification.

BPJPH officials state that, under the mandatory provisions of Article 33 of Indonesia's Law No. 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Assurance, the management of BPJPH halal certification is still the responsibility of the Indonesian Council of Islamic Scholars (MUI). Article 33 of Indonesia's new law and the Halal Product Assurance Law (UU JPH) stipulate that the MUI body is authorized to determine halal products.
