Law No. 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Assurance is a form of Halal assurance for the Indonesian people. It is undeniable that Indonesia, as the country with the world's largest Muslim population (87.5%), has enormous potential in the Halal product market.
Under this law, in implementation, Indonesia's Halal certification is carried out by 3 (three) stakeholders, including the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH), the Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI), and the Halal Inspection Body (LPH), one of which is the Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics of the Indonesian Council of Ulama (LPPOM MUI).
First, through the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH), the government has the authority to register Halal certification applications and issue Halal certificates. The Halal Product Assurance Law (UU JPH) also stipulates that BPJPH is responsible for the socialization, education and publication of Halal products, which is also BPJPH's obligation.
Second, MUI is a forum of Muslim Ulama, Zuama and Intellectuals. BPJPH's cooperation with MUI is carried out through Halal auditor certification, product Halal Fatwa determinations, and LPH accreditation.
When determining the Fatwa, the decision on whether a product is Halal food is made by the Fatwa committee at a Fatwa committee meeting. The result is then submitted to BPJPH as the basis for issuing the Halal certificate.
Third, LPH is a body with the authority to carry out inspection and/or testing activities on the Halal nature of products.
The Halal auditor's task is to inspect and review materials; processing; the slaughter system; research equipment, production space and storage; inspect distribution and presentation; inspect the Halal assurance system; and report the inspection and/or test results to LPH.
One of the LPHs involved in Halal inspection is the MUI Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics. It is an independent body under MUI responsible for inspecting the Halal nature of products. Its headquarters are located in the Global Halal Center building at No. 5 Jalan Pemuda, Bogor, and at No. 51 Jalan Proklamasi, Menteng, central Jakarta.
